The Law Enforcement Response to People with Mental Illnesses: A Guide to Research-Informed Policy and Practice
The Justice Center has developed a research guide that examines studies on law enforcement interactions with people with mental illnesses and translates the findings to help policymakers and practitioners develop safe and effective interventions. Supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, it reviews the scope and nature of the problem and a range of law enforcement responses. A limited number of hard copies (NCJ 226965) can be ordered through the National Criminal Justice Reference Service at www.ncjrs.gov or by calling 800-851-3420 (international: 301-519-5500;TTY: 301-947-8374). Planning and Assessing a Law Enforcement Reentry Strategy
The Justice Center and PERF have developed a user-friendly toolkit to help law enforcement leaders and their partners analyze which aspects of their practices and policies are effective in addressing prisoner reentry and how they can improve upon their efforts. Print copies can be obtained from the COPS Office Response Center at 800.421.6770. To download a free copy, click here.
Planning and Assessing a Law Enforcement Reentry Strategy Online Toolkit
Project staff members are developing an interactive, web-based version of the toolkit, which will be available for practitioners to assess their own reentry initiative and identify ways to enhance current practices. The online version will draw its content from the print copy, but will include interactive functionality and provide immediate feedback that summarizes the user’s responses and identifies next steps. To be notified of the launch of the online toolkit, you can subscribe to the Justice Center’s free reentry newsletter by clicking here.
Law Enforcement Reentry Initiative: Learning Sites
The Justice Center and PERF have chosen four COPS-supported "learning sites" that will plan and implement various recommendations and proposed strategies from the toolkit. The selected law enforcement agencies are Muskegon County (Mich.) Sheriff’s Department, Metropolitan (D.C.) Police Department, the Las Vegas (Nev.) Metropolitan Police Department, and the White Plains (N.Y.) Police Department. The sites will conduct a needs assessment and receive targeted technical assistance from reentry experts. Feedback from agency personnel, the technical assistance team, and other research will be summarized and released nationally on aspects of difficult-to-execute law enforcement reentry activities.
