8/12/2009: More Governors Form Statewide Reentry Task Forces
In recent months, governors in at least four states – Delaware, North Carolina, Kentucky and South Dakota – established statewide task forces to tackle issues associated with the growing numbers of adults released from prison and returning to communities.
Justice Center staff recently traveled to Ohio to pilot test a companion tool to the Reentry Partnerships guide, and promote the guide and its recommendations at a national reentry conference.
The CSG Justice Center is conducting a project to improve how state and local officials design and implement policies that aim to increase revenues through the assessment and collection of court-ordered fines and fees.
6/5/2009: House Appropriations Subcommittee includes $114 million for Second Chance Act
On Thursday, June 4, 2009, the House Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee approved a draft appropriations bill for fiscal year 2010 that includes $114 million for Second Chance Act programs.
5/13/2009: May 20: Grantwriting 101 Webinar
The Council of State Governments Justice Center and International Community Corrections Association is conducting a free webinar on grantwriting. The webinar will outline basic steps to take in preparing any kind of funding proposal, as well as provide guidance to help organizations think through their project design and get their program organized.
5/11/2009: Solicitation for Second Chance Act Youth Offender Reentry Grants Released
The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), U.S. Department of Justice, has released the solicitation for Second Chance Act Youth Offender Reentry grants (Section 101).
5/11/2009: Second Chance Act and Justice Center state work highlighted in NYT editorial
The New York Times published an editorial today that highlights the Second Chance Act and the Council of State Governments Justice Center’s work in states to manage prison growth while addressing public safety.
5/8/2009: Second Chance Act Mentoring Grants Update
Section 211 of the Second Chance Act authorizes the U.S. Department of Justice to make grants to nonprofit organizations and Indian tribes for the purpose of providing mentoring and transitional services essential to reintegrating individuals released from prisons or jails into the community. In fiscal year 2009, $10 million is available for mentoring programs under the Second Chance Act.
5/6/2009: Solicitation for Second Chance Act Juvenile Mentoring Grants Released Today
On May 6, 2009, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), U.S. Department of Justice, released the solicitation for Second Chance Act mentoring grants for juvenile populations (Section 211).
The Council of State Governments Justice Center is conducting a free webinar to help potential applicants respond to the Second Chance Act solicitation for Mentoring Grants to Nonprofit Organizations, which was released on April 23, 2009, by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), U.S. Department of Justice.

4/22/2009: House Appropriations Subcommittee Holds Hearings on Prisoner Reentry
During the week of March 9, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and Science held seven hearings focusing on prisoner reentry issues that reflect Capitol Hill’s high level of interest in these issues. Congressman Allan Mollohan (D-WV), Chairman of the Committee, conducted the hearings with ranking member Congressman Frank Wolf (R-VA).
4/22/2009: Transition from Jail to Community (TJC) Solicitation
The National Institute of Corrections and the Urban Institute Announce Solicitations for Four New “Transition from Jail to Community (TJC) Initiative” sites.
The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center released a new report, “Justice Reinvestment in Texas: Assessing the Impact of the 2007 Justice Reinvestment Initiative,” that finds the justice reinvestment policies enacted in 2007 by the Texas legislature are averting state prison population growth and increasing public safety.
The Council of State Governments Justice Center announced today the release of "Improving Outcomes for People with Mental Illnesses under Community Corrections Supervision: A Guide to Research-Informed Policy and Practice," which was supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the National Institute of Corrections, U.S. Department of Justice. The Guide reviews the body of recent research on community corrections supervision for people with mental illnesses and translates the findings to help officials develop effective interventions.
3/30/2009: Archive of SCA Webinar on Grants for State and Local Reentry
The Justice Center conducted a free webinar to help potential applicants respond to the Second Chance Act solicitation for state and local reentry demonstration projects. The Powerpoint slides and audio from the webinar are now available.
3/13/2009: Toolkit for Second Chance Act Reentry Demonstration Project Grant Applicants
The Council of State Governments Justice Center has developed a toolkit for state and local governments and Indian tribes interested in responding to the solicitation for state and local reentry demonstration projects released by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), U.S. Department of Justice
The Administration for Children and Families released a solicitation for State IV-D agencies (agencies that oversee child support enforcement) to submit proposals for the jurisdictions in their States that are grantees of the Prisoner Reentry Initiative (PRI)

2/27/2009: Solicitation for Second Chance Act Grants to State and Local Governments Released Today
On February 27, 2009, the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), U.S. Department of Justice, released the solicitation for Second Chance Act grants to state and local governments for adult reentry demonstration projects (Section 101). Funding under this section is available to help state and local agencies implement programs and strategies to reduce recidivism and ensure the safe and successful reentry of adults released from prisons and jails.
